　　The Bear and the Two Travelers

　　Two men were traveling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he could. The bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other traveler got down from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the bear had whispered in his ear. “He gave me this advice,” his companion replied. “Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger.”

　　两个人一起旅行，突然一头熊出现在他们的路上。其中的一个人快速的爬上一棵树，并把自己藏在树枝中。另外一个人看到自己一定会被袭击了，就赶紧平躺在地面上，这时候熊走了过来，用自己的鼻子碰了碰他，并且闻变了他的全身，这个人摒住呼吸，尽可能的装得像死了一样。这头熊很快离开了他，因为据说熊是不碰死人身体的。当这只熊走了以后，另一个旅行者从树上爬了下来，并且开玩笑的问他的朋友，熊在他耳边说了什么。“他给了我一个建议，”他的伙伴回答道，“不要和在遇到危险时抛弃你的朋友一起旅行。”
